To learn or not to learn?

Ok with school starting next Monday there has been a lot of talk from all of you and whether or not to take the dogs on the first day of school. Well I am getting Alfie this Friday and will be keeping him through next Tuesday. So many of you have said you don't want to take the dogs on the first days of school. I wanted to know why? haha. That sounds a little rude but it's not meant to be lol.

Anyways, I need to talk to the Puppy Raising Manager, Michelle, she already asked me if I would like to take him to school and I'm all for it. I will ask her and whatever she says goes! lol. Anyways, I just wanted to know why ya'll do or don't want to take them.

I will have time in between all of my classes to go home if needed, especially the first days because most teachers don't keep us the whole time. Let me know what you think...

Here's a picture of Sammy for your viewing pleasure ;)

Personally I won't be taking Charlie the first day for my comfort. I don't know the campus really well and I really want to get a feel for things before taking him, plus, he's with Ally this week. I also need to get some things done with admissions and what not since it is my first term. Those are my reasons! *grin* I say, if you're school is ok with it and Michelle is ok with it, go for it!

I don't take them the first day just because the first day of a term is usually madness. Not to mention I am never sure where all my classes are. I also always like to give the teachers and students in my classes heads up that there will be one attending just to be polite. Our college is really cool about it, we don't have to like get permission or anything. They are always happy to see a dog in training there. =) Hope that helps.

Hmm.. nice thoughts. I have been going to this school for 3.5 years so if I get lost I don't deserve to keep attending lol. It's usually not too hectic because I avoid the high traffic areas and Alfie will probably be going to the school on Friday or Saturday because I have to teach Darrell where his classes are.

We know another service Dog trainer at the school and she says that nothing is required in order to bring them. I'll have all the papers and stuff if anyone questions me so no worries there. Plus, I'm only going to have him for those first 2 days there so I think I'll just take him and go up to the teachers after class and explain whats going to be happening the whole semester. I only have 4 classes this semester so there won't be too many people to convince. 2 of the teachers already know me so yeah.. ok.. just wanted to talk about it. Thanks!

I usually go back and forth about whether to take my pups the first day or not. I usually end up taking them. I always avoid high traffic areas and take outside routes to most of my classes. :D I usually don't ask permission, (I have been going to my school for a long time and everyone has been fine with it) but I will go up to my teacher after class to explain. Paris will definitely be going with me on Wednesday when we start school. :D Sounds like you have things pretty well thought out. :D Good luck, I love taking my pups to class.

Thanks Megan, I'm reassured now :) By the way, I dropped your thing in the mail on Thursday.. Let me know when you get it in K!

I think it is totally up to you. The challenge is having enough brain cells to be able to deal with the havoc of 1st day and deal with the needs of the pup. I work at a college and 1st day is totally crazy. If something goes on and you need to deal with a training issue but something else prevents you from doing so, the pup might develop some bad habits. But totally up to you, I mean you've been there before and know the drill......so just go have fun!

But I'd make sure you add about 15 mins to where ever you have to go, pups tend to lengthen your day that way. Good luck

I've never taken a pup to school, so I don't know a thing about it. But I'm just so excited for you!! I can't wait to hear how it all goes.

Wow, Natalie, I'm impressed by your moxie!! :-) But really, why not? If you're up for it -- I'm sure Mr. Alf will be! Just do whatever you feel comfortable with. So far he's been great on our outings in public...he's at his best when working. He likes his "work"...so whatever you & Michelle decide I'm sure will be fine!

It's fun hearing about other students' experiences...the closest I ever came to taking a dog to class was taking Willie to our homeschool co-op...but I was the teacher! A very different set of stressors!! :-)

Thanks everyone! I think if Michelle says ok I will take him. I'll talk to her probably on/by Friday so we'll see how it all goes! The 'hard' day will be Monday (three classes) Tuesday will be easy though, only one. I can do it!
